Blog #7. The Great Gatsby

This week I finished this book. The ending part was really interesting. At the chapter 8, Tom actually told Wilson that Gatsby was the one who killed Mrs. Wilson. Wilson was crazy even though it wasn't the driver's fault that Mrs. Wilson died. Mrs. Wilson ran into cars. However, Wilson was planning to take Mrs. Wilson away because he noticed that she was cheating on him. So when Wilson heard that Gatsby hit her with a car and she died, Wilson went to Gatsby and killed him with a gun. Nick heard that Wilson went to Gatsby's house and he ran to Gatsby's house but he was already dead. And then at the chapter 9, Nick tried to call everyone who knows Gatsby, but the people who were invited at the party and enjoyed the party, refused to come to Gatsby's funeral. Gatsby's father come and tell Nick about short life story of Gatsby.

This last chapter show the extreme human's cruelty. People enjoyed Gatsby's party at his house, but when Gatsby was actually dead, no one went to his funeral and they abondoned him, even the worker at Gatsby's house. The partner of Gatsby didn't come to his funeral, too even though Nick went to him and asked to come. I should find another book to read, now.

Blog #6. The Great Gatsby

This week I read chapter 7. This chapter was interesting and sad. At the first, the author shows how Gatsby is living right now. Gatsby changed all of his servents to prevent the gossip about Daisy and Gatsby. Nick and Gatsby went to Tom and Daisy's house to eat lunch together. And there was Jordan Baker also. Tom realized that Daisy and Gatsby are liking each other. In this scene, even I could see that Daisy doesn't really care about Tom knowing about Daisy and Gatsby's feelings. And then Daisy suggests to go to city but people didn't agree to go to city. Later on, Tom suggests to go to city. Daisy and Gatsby went to city on the same car, and Nick, Jordan, and Tom rode on same car. When they arrived at city, Daisy showed that she wants to be alone with Gatsby but Tom doesn't let her to do so. All of them go to same hotel room and have some fight, also Tom tells everyone about the truth about Gatsby. All of them come back from city and Nick, Jordan, and Tom see the accident and the death of Mrs. Wilson. Tom thinks that Gatsby did everything but actually Daisy did such thing. When Tom gets to home, Tom talks with Daisy.

This chapter was very interesting. I think this chapter shows the climax conflict between Tom and Gatsby. Also it shows how Daisy doesn't care about Tom. She also said that she actually didn't like Tom even when they are marrying. I also could see that this story is about to end.

Blog #5. The Great Gatsby

This week I read chapter 6. At the chapter 6, it emphasizes the love between Daisy and Gatsby. Also in this chapter it talked about where the wealth of Gatsby comes from. Daisy frequently visited Gatsby's house and Tom starts to suspect Daisy. Gatsby held another party and invited Nick, Daisy, and Tom. Daisy had an unpleasant time at the party because Tom insulted Gatsby, how he earned money. Daisy became upset and tried to protect Gatsby. Daisy went back to her home with Tom and Gatsby seems a bit sad. Gatsby wants Daisy not to be married to Tom but be with him.

I think this chapter is showing how selfish Gatsby is. Even though Gatsby liked Daisy, he shouldn't have shown his feeling. He should have keep his mind for himself. This can be shown as his bravery but to me, it's not. Gatsby is selfish to want Daisy because she is already married to Tom. He shouldn't have move to West Egg to be close to Daisy.

Blog #4. The Great Gatsby

This week I only read chapter 5. The ending of chapter 5 was quite sad. In chapter 5, it shows the first meeting between Gatsby and Daisy. Gatsby gets really nervous when he was waiting for Daisy. When Daisy came, the first few minutes were awkward time. Nick goes out shortly and when he comes back Daisy was crying and Gatsby was smiling with joy. Another day, Gatsby invited Nick and Daisy over. Gatsby also invited a singer and the singer sings a song. Gatsby and Daisy totally forget that Nick was there. Therefore Nick leaves Gatsby's house quietly.

I think Gatsby just used Nick for his own plan. He wanted to approach to Daisy but he couldn't because Daisy was already married. And then Gatsby finds out Nick who was the neighbor to Daisy and seems to know Daisy well.

Blog #3. The Great Gatsby

This week I read chapter 3 and 4. At the chapter 1 and 2, Nick didn't talk much about the person Gatsby. The connection between Nick and Gatsby was just the fact that Gatsby is Nick's neighbor. Nick always heard about Gatsby by other people; however to me, all the things people talked about Gatsby is all false. All of them are nonsense. So my question, why the title of this book is The Great Gatsby, was becoming larger and larger. And then in this chapter finally, Nick meets with Gatsby. Actually at chapter 3, Gatsby invites Nick to his party. Nick goes there and feels very awkward. Everyone talks about Gatsby but still they seem not to know the true side of Gatsby. Then at the chapter 4, Nick finds out that Gatsby likes Daisy and he used to like her before Daisy was married, too. Nick and Gatsby go out for the lunch and Nick gets to know Gatsby more while they talk. And then Gatsby ask to invite Daisy to their tea time.

The interesting fact about this book is that we cannot find the connection between the title and the theme by reading only until chapter 4. I still do not get why the title is The 'GREAT' Gatsby. Gatsby is just a person who is rich and a person who used to like and still likes Daisy, Tom's wife. Why is he great? What makes him great? I think I should figure out by reading more.

I chose 'Oh Happy Day' for my song. The reason why is because this lyrics match how she felt at the last moment. I described that she almost even cried due to happiness. And the lyrics are talking about the happy day!

Indirect Characterization

Susan had audition for our school drama. Before the audition, her legs are shaking and her arms are shaking as well. I could hear her paper shaking while she reading her lines. She was mumbling her words when she practiced the monolog. She also missed some of her lines. However, I could tell that she must be enjoying this because she was making big happy smile right before she went into the auditorium where the audition is going on. Even after the audition, she still had a smile. When she was talking to me, she was talking so fast; I couldn’t understand. She kept repeating how wonderful she felt when she was auditioning. About one hour later, the audition was ended and after few minutes and the paper which has the names was posted. We both checked together and when we found the name ‘Susan Lee’ she started to cry. Her eyes got so much bigger, I could even see her pupil. Her eyes were sparkling because she almost produced tears of happiness. She jumped around the whole room, hugging me. Congratulation Susan!
